This August 21st concert features saxophonist Ryan Freitas. Freitas is a career multi-instrumentalist, composer, educator, and producer. Based in Minneapolis after spending nearly a decade in Detroit, Freitas has worked with artists across genres, such as Lyle Lovett, Kem, and Jazz luminaries Rodney Whitaker and Vincent Chandler.

For this Jazz Access concert at Rondo Plaza Freitas will present the music from Joe Henderson's landmark album "In N Out", plus other selections from his songbook. Freitas will be joined by musicians Mitch Van Laar on trumpet, Joe Strachan on piano, Dan Carpel on bass, and Abinnet Berhanu on drums.

Cody Steinmann is "one of the most prolific guitarists in the Twin Cities" (Jazz88 KBEM FM). Known as an outstanding composer and improviser, Cody's genre-defying style, technical prowess, and deep emotional expression resonates with his fans. Cody has worked with Ben Williams, JD Allen, Javier Santiago, Russ Johnson, Nic Cacioppo, Solomon Parham, Anthony Fung, Max Gerl and Fode Bangoura. These summer shows are a highlight for nearby residents and those just beginning to explore Payne Avenue.

The soulful modern sound of Minneapolis-based trumpeter Omar Abdulkarim performing with three of the top jazz players in the region, Ted Olsen (bass), Kavyesh Kaviraj (keyboard) and Kevin Washington (drums), headlines the Jazz Access concert at Capri Plaza. Called “the essence of what jazz is” (Jazz Police), Abdulkarim has been playing trumpet since the early age of 14 months. He has shared the stage with Roy Hargrove, Redman, Method Man, KRS-ONE, Talib Kweli, and performed with Nicholas Payton’s Television Studio Orchestra and Valerie Ponomarev’s Big Band. He has also written and recorded with Lauryn Hill and Jose James. After living in New York for 11 years and completing a BA at the renowned New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Omar is back in Minnesota recording and composing. He recently performed at Taste of Minnesota and also works with Source Code and the Minnesota Hard Bop Collective, among others.

This free Jazz Access concert features the dynamic sounds of Kevin Washington & RA Spirit. Known for his decades behind the drum kit, Washington is also a talented writer, vocalist, and guitarist. With his new project RA Spirit and the album Journey to the Light, he pushes musical boundaries, blending jazz, funk, Afro-Latin rhythms, and more. His music reflects a deep commitment to community and activism. These summer shows on the plaza of the Arlington Hills Community Center are a highlight for residents and others exploring Payne Avenue.

Jack studied at Walker West with Felix James in 2004 His group blends classic jazz with new originals. The group has played venues and festivals throughout the area, most recently as the featured artist for the Rondo Community Music Series.

Saxophonist Walter Chancellor Jr. has been a mainstay in the Twin Cities Jazz and R&B music scene for the past 25 years. His music blends brings a soulful touch to jazz classics and new compositions. Walter has performed, recorded and has shared the stage with such artists as Chaka Khan, Willie Nelson, Maceo Parker, Candy Dulfer, and Prince. As an educator Walter is a founding members of the Twin Cities Mobile Jazz Project and After School program in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The program is designed to expose adults and children to Jazz Culture, technology, music history and gladly educates them about our great American art form, JAZZ and other multimedia art endeavors & opportunities.
